  • Position Summary

    The position is responsible for the management of the Media Operations team in Germany including content preparation for channel broadcast and non-linear services. In addition, the role manages relationships with outsource vendors for broadcast operations and playout services, oversees key projects such as live broadcast events, channel launches and expanding digital media requirements. The role is based on a Monday-Friday working pattern, but includes an on-call status to respond to broadcast emergencies and may occasionally require support for live events at weekends and overnight. The role reports into the central Global Technology and Operations (GT&O) department via the VP of Regional Operations in London, while servicing the needs of the local Germany, Switzerland and Austria (GSA) business.

    Responsibilities

    • Lead, coach and develop staff. Working with managers to set departmental goals
    • Oversee and ensure appropriate processes and documentation are in place and kept up to date for all operational departments and ensure staff have a full understanding. Proactively build relationships with key departments and peers across the business
    • Understand current and future requirements of the business for Media Operations inclusive of the Discovery and Eurosport portfolios
    • Produce and deliver business cases and presentations to illustrate client needs
    • Negotiate agreements and manage vendors through personal relationships and formal Service Level Agreements, with an emphasis on maintaining superior quality of service and operational reliability
    • Review any issues, identify any trends; partner with other departments to manage issues through to resolution
    • Oversee, monitor & review staff performance, ensure Direct Reports have an effective way to monitor staff performance, report to VP and leadership and recognize high performing staff
    • Ensure departmental appraisals, goals and development plans are created, maintained and company deadlines are met
    • Support the GSA business with preparation and delivery of Summer and Winter Olympics services and other major sporting events including Bundesliga

    Requirements

    • Good technical awareness and able to converse effectively with technologists and engineers
    • Extensive experience and in-depth understanding of broadcasting multiplatform TV services and the associated operational processes and workflows
    • Familiar with broadcast production, scheduling and playout systems
    • Knowledge of the Pay-TV, Free to Air and digital platforms in the German market
    • Able to engage in the process of best practice business management in the department, identifying opportunities for improved services and cost reduction
    • Confident at presenting at all levels, including the use of Microsoft Project
    • Financial awareness. Able to manage departmental and project budgets
    • Good at building strong relationships
    • Strong leadership skills and gravitas. Able to appoint, direct and motivate a team
    • Excellent people management skills including the ability to motivate individuals via dotted-line and matrix-management relationships
    • Able to negotiate the politics of the corporate environment, being the lead ‘central’ representative where the regional team are the ‘client’
    • Strong commercial experience including contract negotiation, contract management and SLA’s. Able to be a central commercial relationship owner
    • Familiarity with procurement processes and RFPs
    • Strong facilitation skills and organisational skills
    • Able to manage situations personally and through a team, while knowing when it is appropriate to escalate an issue
    • Able to lead projects, including knowledge of best-practice Project Management techniques
    • Experience in live production techniques, including (ideally) sports events
    • Able to travel on business from time to time
    • Excellent English and German communication skills are required
