Position Summary

This role will form a key part of the Distribution Engineering team ensuring the efficient and reliable delivery of Discovery’s services. Reporting into the Distribution Operations Manager the position will provide day to day engineering support of DNE’s distribution operations, including decoder and multiplexing operations. This role will have one direct report, the Distribution Operations Co-ordinator.


Participation in engineering projects will be required along with tracking and reporting of Quality of Service issues. Monthly reporting of key distribution metrics is required to seek improvements in network performance and quality of service.


The ability to communicate technical information to third parties is essential as this role is required to act as a point of contact within the technical operations team.


Responsibility for Representing Distribution Engineering in project meetings and communication to key stakeholders requires a polite customer focused approach along with a professional manner backed up with technical knowledge.


Management of the Dataminer NMS is required to ensure accurate alarm handling and consistent operation by Transmission Operators and the US TOC. A pro-active approach to managing this system is required in order to maintain optimum service monitoring and minimise outage durations.


Close liaison with existing third party vendors will be required to ensure maximum system availability and to ensure that Discovery services are delivered to the highest possible standards. Meet regularly with key vendors to track issues, discuss future projects, keep S.O.P’s up to date.


This is a service based role where rapid response is expected and the ability to form strong working relationships across the technical teams both in the UK and beyond are viewed as key. The role demands the ability to deal effectively with suppliers and vendors to ensure Discovery’s interests are best served.


This role will be part of a team and the nominal working Monday to Friday will be Discovery office hours 09:00 to 17:30. Out of hours and weekend work will be required from time to time to support projects and system work as required. Time of in lieu will be granted for work outside of normal core hours.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Supervise, support and develop the Distribution Operations Co-ordinator
  • Managing and developing Conditional Access systems and procedures
  • Provide technical support for affiliates
  • On call availability (On a rota system) out of office hours for emergencies
  • Tracking, reporting and investigative analysis of network performance to drive quality of service
  • Co-ordination and communication of planned engineering works and outages both internal and external
  • Manage, maintain and configure compression technology systems in use at Discovery communications.
  • Budget planning and expenditure; liaising with finance departments on Transponder & Uplink and Decoder budgets
  • Establish and implement operational SOP’s
  • Manage and administrate the Dataminer NMS System
  • Active Involvement in projects relating to the delivery of Discovery Channels throughout the EMEA/UK region 
  • Proactive management of key third party suppliers involved in the implementation of projects and upgrades etc
  • Attend regular meetings with key Vendors
  • Working to maintain and improve the quality of DNE’s output
  • Creation and updating of system support documentation.
  • Assist and support the Management of Distribution Engineering Technology
  • Work closely with the other members of the Distribution Engineering Team to ensure Business and operational requirements are understood, met and communicated.
  • Provide specialist technical support to other DNE departments





Additional Responsibilities:


  • Updating weekly reports to management on Projects, Network Issues and general business initiatives
  • Attending daily transmission discrepancy meetings as a representative of Distribution Engineering
  • Purchasing of equipment / Managing Repair of equipment
  • Self Development – Keep up to date with the latest technology and industry trends, attend appropriate training courses
  • Travel may be required to visit and support international vendors and affiliates
  • Other duties as required





  • A proven track record and experience working in a multi channel distribution engineering environment, either directly or in a 3rd party management capacity.
  • Experience of supervising staff desirable
  • Experience and knowledge of Conditional Access systems.
  • Experience of Budget Planning and expenditure within budget
  • Knowledge and experience of DVB, Mpeg 2 and Mpeg 4 compression systems. Experience with encoding platforms and multiplex technology in particular Cisco PowerVu would be an advantage.
  • Interest in Distribution and Engineering Technologies and desire to keep up to date with latest industry developments
  • Advanced IT skills – familiarity with MS office, MS Visio, MS Project.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to capture and present performance data in an efficient and effective manner
  • Excellent organizational/administrative skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent and appropriate customer facing, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate ability to prioritise and multitask and perform as part of a team
  • Ability to be amiable and calm in pressured situations
  • Tact and diplomacy; excellent organisational skills in a busy environment
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to different demands.
  • Ideally educated to degree level or with equivalent relevant experience.
